“How are things down at the flower shop?” Chuckie asks.

“Cool.”

“Yeah, business good?”

“It’s alright. Slow this time of year after Mother’s Day. Not many honeys buying their men Father’s Day flowers, ya know?”

Chuckie nods. “Guess not.”

Something is up. I can tell by the way he’s just shooting off random stuff, like he wants to say more but can’t. Looking back, he’s almost covered the wall. Damn my baby’s little patch of paint is gone. Maybe I should have left that. It was too cute.

“What’s on your mind, brother?”

“Huh?” Chuckie asks.

“Something bothering you?”

Chuckie lowers the roller. “Guess you can say that. It’s Jackson.”

“Talk to me.”

“He’s pissing blood. Been doing it for weeks. Finally forced him to tell Margie cause I know she’d make him take his ass to the doctor. But been sitting on it for a minute and this shit is eating me up. Margie finds out I kept it from her and it’s on, man.”

“Why didn’t you say something?”

Chuckie drops the roller. “He asked me not to. Shit happens. Hell back in the nineties, the same thing happened to me and it cleared up. Feel me?”

“Nah, Chuck. At Jackson’s age, you know the deal.”

“I know…I know. Fuck. Margie knows now and she’s a wreck. Nerves. I bought her over here so she can give my man a break, but…she’s stressing and I’m stressing. I hate lying to her.”

“Yeah, so I gotta tell Tia.”

“Jackson don’t want no one to know. Not his girls. Man I shouldn’t have told you, it’s just...” He looks back to the wall, puts his hands to his waist. “I just hope I didn’t fuck things up by sitting on it. Needed to unload.”

“My Pops had a bout of that years back.”

Chuck head turns he looks at me. “No shit?”

“It was kidney stones, completely fixable. Thing is, we can’t screw around with our health. If he ain’t doing well, partner, you got to call him on it.”

“I hear you. Kidney stones you say?”

“Yeah, painful, but they can take care of it in outpatient surgery now. Probably just kidney stones.”

“Oh, good. Okay, yeah. That’s good.”
